Raising Men

My sister said once that you never know what sort of adventure you’re off on when you get into my car. As much as she made me realize when someone told me that she said that, that it is indeed true, I tried to fight it for quite some time, to no avail.

What she meant is that sometimes my life gets a little bit crazy. In fact the day she said it, I’d just learned that someone, very likely my son, had driven my car off of highway 101 in Oregon and into a ditch.

I was off to rescue it with a good friend of mine, Jessica, and my other sister Cristina who I’m often also off to rescue. The strange part is, I never really realized that my life was any more or less chaotic than anyone else’s. To tell the truth, not having all the busyness that seeps into my days would probably be boring. However, I wouldn’t mind if the excitement was a bit more planned. It’s been said that you can choose to act or to react, and I’d like to do a lot more acting and a lot less reacting.

What does that have to do with raising men? Well my husband is a lifelong football coach. He naturally relates to men, especially to my men. That’s great right?! I mean they love me to death, they’d protect me if they had an occasion. They adore me.

A few years back though I decided I wanted more than all that. I wanted to really get down and dirty with my men. I honestly started that adventure before I even knew it was a goal. Back when Malachai was just a little guy he liked to stomp in the mud puddles. The first few times I didn’t let him, and then… I decided what the hell. I’m a what the hell kinda girl after all. So we got him rubber boots, and we took him puddle stomping!

For what it’s worth, I also let my kids and all their friends jump on their beds for a few months. See I couldn’t understand why moms didn’t allow that. Seemed needlessly controlling to me. After a few broken bed frames, I got the idea.

So what’s the point in this blog post? I’ll tell you. There’s a ton of stuff I want to do with my men! In fact, don’t laugh, but I’ve been Googling things to do with boys. Now I found some pretty silly and outdated posts indeed, but I’ve also come up with some pretty solid ideas. So if you don’t already know what guys want to do, or you just want a few ideas so that you can go out and play with your guys, here are some things I intend to start doing, or am already doing with mine!

  • Kayaking
  • Canoeing
  • Surfing
  • Horseback Riding (When I get to a weight that is appropriate)
  • Amusement Parks
  • Great Wolf Lodge
  • Laser Tag
  • Skateboarding (They can teach me!)
  • Bowling
  • Fishing (I’m so not cleaning the fish)
  • Crabbing (I don’t want to clean these either, but I doooo want to eat them!)
  • Camping (I love camping!)

So, how do you relate to your men? What do you do or want to do together? Please comment! I really need the ideas!
